2025 WIC Distinguished Contribution Award
Social Contribution award-winning enterprise: Tencent
World-leading internet and tech company Tencent has upheld its mission of "Value for Users, Tech for Good".
By harnessing the power of technology, the company is integrating public welfare into everyday life and making multidimensional contributions centered on sustainable social value innovation — allowing goodwill to take root and grow within its innovation ecosystem.
Amplifying social good through platform connectivity
In 2007, Tencent, together with the Tencent Charity Foundation, launched an online public fundraising platform, one of the first internet fundraising information platforms designated by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.
From its launch through October 2025, the platform has raised more than 36.7 billion yuan ($5.1 billion), with over 1.79 billion individual donations, supporting more than 138,000 public welfare projects.
Since 2015, Tencent Charity has worked with nonprofit organizations, users, business enterprises and media outlets to launch "99 Giving Day", an annual nationwide public welfare campaign.
Since its launch in September 2015, the campaign — having now been held for 11 consecutive years — has raised 18.3 billion yuan from users and engaged with over 24,000 nonprofit organizations and 67,000 public welfare projects. These initiatives span education support, rural vitalization, medical assistance, environmental protection and public advocacy — making it one of China's most widely participated, influential and diverse public welfare events.
In 2024, "99 Giving Day" was upgraded to promote rational giving, diversified forms of public welfare and sustainable development projects, while fostering long-term trust between donors and organizations. In 2025, the campaign introduced innovative tools that aimed to create richer and more accessible ways for the public to participate in charitable activities.
An innovation ecosystem exploring new paths to addressing social problems
In 2021, in response to national development strategies, Tencent undertook its fourth strategic upgrade, formally incorporating "advancing sustainable social value innovation" into its core corporate strategy. Alongside its commitment to the consumer internet and the industrial internet, this new focus became a foundational pillar guiding Tencent's core businesses.
To facilitate the implementation of this strategy, Tencent established the Sustainable Social Value division (SSV) that is dedicated to addressing major social challenges under the new development paradigm and exploring high-quality, sustainable pathways for social value creation. The SSV comprises one core platform — the Tencent Charity platform — and multiple innovation laboratories.
The division focuses on areas including rural vitalization, technological innovation, carbon neutrality, social emergency responses, inclusive healthcare, cultural inheritance and innovation, as well as rural education.
Leveraging the digital capabilities and sustainable business models of products such as WeChat and QQ, Tencent is exploring practical solutions to social problems while contributing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In the field of social emergency responses, Tencent has partnered with the China Earthquake Networks Center and China Media Group's national emergency broadcasting service to launch a nationwide earthquake early-warning mini program, providing effective disaster preparedness guidance.
Through technological innovation and ecosystem collaboration, Tencent has also helped build China's first large-scale social emergency rescue network — the "5-minute emergency response circle" — which has become a benchmark case for urban emergency response innovation globally.
In May 2025, Tencent joined more than 10 leading Chinese enterprises and organizations to initiate a sustainable social value ecosystem, working collectively to contribute Chinese insights and solutions to global sustainable development.
Advancing AI for good
As the AI era unfolds, Tencent continues to advance its "AI Plus" strategy through a dual engine of proprietary development and open-source collaborations.
Across a raft of fields, including carbon neutrality, biodiversity conservation, emotional support for vulnerable groups, smart healthcare, digital culture and rural vitalization, Tencent is exploring practical applications of AI.
This, in turn, is serving as a catalyst for turning technological innovation into a real-world impact.
In 2024, the World Internet Conference established the WIC Distinguished Contribution Award to recognize individuals and enterprises that have made outstanding contributions in global internet-related fields.
To date, 12 leading figures and 26 well-known business enterprises from around the world have received the award.
For enterprises, the award features three categories — Social Contribution, Innovation Breakthrough, and Growth Potential.
The awarded companies span a wide range of sectors — including internet platforms, mobile communications, artificial intelligence, chip designs, energy and power and cybersecurity.
Together, they depict a diverse and thriving internet ecosystem, encouraging more outstanding enterprises to engage in the development of the internet and to jointly explore the limitless possibilities of the digital future.
