On July 3, Ren Xianliang, secretary-general of the World Internet Conference (WIC), held a meeting in Beijing with participants of the Ministerial Workshop on WTO Electronic Commerce Rules. The workshop was organized under the guidance of China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and jointly hosted by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and Academy for International Business Officials.
The participants comprised high-level officials responsible for trade and economic affairs from Angola, Ghana, and Pakistan, ambassadors to the WTO from Cambodia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Zambia, as well as representatives from ASEAN-RCEP Joint Committee at the Indonesian Ministry of Trade and other economic and trade organizations.
Ren extended a warm welcome to the participants. He provided an overview of the WIC's initiatives and achievements in strengthening cooperation among developing countries, promoting inclusive digital development, and advancing innovative practices in the field of cross-border e-commerce. He emphasized that the WIC, as an international organization, attaches great importance to the role of the digital economy in global trade and economic development. The WIC is committed to building a global internet platform for extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, promoting international exchanges, and working to bridge the global digital divide so that the benefits of digital transformation can be more equitably shared among all countries and peoples, he said.
The participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the WIC's vision and practices in fostering technological innovation and empowering global digital economic development.
They also took part in the WIC Open Day activities commemorating the third anniversary of the WIC's establishment as an international organization, which took place at the WIC's headquarters in Beijing. They reviewed the decade-long journey and milestones of the WIC and visited the Technology and Life Market, where they experienced the innovative integration of cutting-edge technologies and intangible cultural heritage showcased by WIC member organizations.
The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
