The World Internet Conference (WIC) held an information session in Brussels on June 26, targeting industry players in Europe. The event gathered representatives from enterprises and organizations including ZTE Corporation, Orange, Telenet, ChinaEU, and the Europe China Joint Innovation Center.
Ren Xianliang, secretary-general of the WIC, noted that since its establishment in 2022, the WIC has remained committed to fostering an internet governance system featuring joint contribution and shared benefits. It also serves as a key platform for communication and cooperation among governments, enterprises, academia, and research institutions, according to Ren.
As a membership-based international organization, the WIC has attracted 195 leading companies, industry associations, and renowned experts from 40 countries. Its European members include influential figures such as Louis Pouzin, known as the "Father of the French internet," and Werner Zorn, the "father of the German internet," as well as companies like SAP and Nokia.
Ren emphasized Belgium's pivotal role in digital governance and technological innovation, given its position as host to the European Union headquarters and numerous international organizations, policymaking bodies, and multinational tech firms. He expressed the hope that the session would help deepen mutual understanding and expand cooperation between the WIC and stakeholders across Belgium and Europe, working together to shape an open, secure, and mutually beneficial digital future.
WIC representatives briefed the audience about the organization's background, mission, collaborative resources, and membership benefits, and expressed a strong interest in strengthening partnerships with leading European internet enterprises and institutions.
Attendees welcomed the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the WIC and expressed enthusiasm for closer engagement with the organization.
