Addressing an audience of global tech leaders at an AI computing power related event, Luigi Gambardella, president of ChinaEU, emphasized that as AI and cloud services drive demand for computing power, sustainability must be prioritized to ensure long-term economic and environmental viability.

The event was the AI Computing Power Development Forum, held by the World Internet Conference during the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, on March 4, where Gambardella as a keynote speaker underscored the urgent need to build green and intelligent computing centers.

He highlighted the alarming energy consumption of data centers, which currently accounts for nearly one percent of global electricity use. Without intervention, this figure could rise to 3–4 percent by 2030, surpassing the energy demands of many nations. Electricity costs, which constitute up to 40 percent of a data center’s operational expenses, pose a significant financial burden, he noted, adding that by optimizing energy efficiency, computing centers can reduce consumption by as much as 40 percent, generating billions in savings while aligning with sustainability goals.

AI-driven predictive analytics and real-time monitoring can optimize server workloads, dynamically adjust cooling systems, and enhance power distribution. Such strategies not only improve performance but also minimize environmental impact, according to Gambardella.

He also stressed the economic benefits of green computing, saying companies prioritizing sustainability will not only reduce operational costs but also gain a competitive edge.

Gambardella urged industry leaders to invest in greener digital infrastructure, noting that both Europe and China are well-positioned to drive this transformation. "Building green and efficient intelligent computing centers is not just a technological upgrade—it is a strategic necessity," he said. By integrating renewable energy, optimizing efficiency, and leveraging AI, we can create a digital economy that is both profitable and environmentally responsible, he concluded.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
