The World Internet Conference (WIC) launched the WIC Think Tank Cooperation Program at the 2024 WIC Wuzhen Summit on Nov 20.

The program involves 60 think tanks from Europe and Asia that have a focus on the global internet field, including businesses, research institutes, universities, and associations. Their areas of expertise range from the internet, artificial intelligence and big data, to telecommunications and cloud computing, and they mainly research the digital economy, cyber culture, cyberspace governance and cybersecurity.

Adhering to the principles of openness, sharing and inclusiveness, the program aims to build an institutionalized cooperation platform for regular academic exchanges and dialogue in the internet field.

In line with the concept of discussing frontier issues, seeking sound development and governance, and addressing opportunities and challenges, the program will also encourage global think tanks to conduct mutual visits, research and seminars on cutting-edge topics such as technological innovation, industrial development and cybersecurity, sharing updates, resources and outcomes. These initiatives are expected to contribute expertise to the building of an equal, inclusive and prosperous cyberspace beneficial to all.

The launch ceremony was attended by John Hoffman, CEO of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association; Zhang Hongke, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, director of the National Engineering Research Center of Advanced Network Technologies at Beijing Jiaotong University and honorary chairman of the Network Innovation and Development Alliance; Yu Xiaohui, president of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology; Wu Yongming, CEO of Alibaba Group; Markus Borchert, CEO of Nokia Shanghai Bell and president of Nokia Greater China; Guo Kaitian, senior vice-president of Tencent; Xu Qingqi, chairman of the New Asia Strategic Research Center in Malaysia; Chris Brown, director of NCEE China; and Angus Cheong, president of the Macao Association for Internet Research.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
