Collection: Ultra high definition video encoding and decoding technology and its application

Achievement

Peking University independently researched and developed the key technology of Ultra-High-Definition(UHD) video encoding and decoding and its system applications, and led the formulation of the national AVS UHD video encoding and decoding standard, which was adopted as an international standard by the global UHD Forum. It is the first time in the world that we, together with HiSilicon Co., Ltd. and Huawei, released the 8K@120P UHD decoding chip which facilitated the launch of China's first 4K and 8K UHD channel CCTV-4K/8K and the world's first 8K+5G live broadcast application in the field of radio and television, marking China's official entry into UHD era.

Application

Related achievements have supported more than ten application manufacturers to develop UHD real-time encoders and decoding chips, which have served hundreds of customers such as the National Radio and Television Administration, and China Central Television. The project results provide live broadcast guarantee for dozens of major events, such as the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and the 2021 CCTV Spring Festival Gala Evening 8K live broadcast. The project team actively cooperates with the Belt and Road Initiatives. It applies the project results to East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, Southern Europe, an Eastern Africa, serving 1 billion users.
