Martin Taylor, WHO representative to China, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in health systems in his video address at the World Internet Conference (WIC) AI for Health (AI4H) Symposium.

He underscored the importance of ethical governance, equity, and people-centered innovation in AI for health. "AI must be safe and equitable—it should narrow health inequities, not widen them," Taylor said.

He highlighted China's leadership in digital health innovation, citing examples such as AI-assisted cancer diagnostics and national initiatives to streamline healthcare data sharing through AI-powered platforms.

Taylor also spoke of ongoing WHO collaborations with China, including the People-Centered Integrated Care program across nine cities, where digital tools and AI are being tested to improve service integration and non-communicable disease management.

Looking ahead, he called for people-centered approaches, equity-focused investment, and dynamic regulation to guide the development and application of AI in health.

The AI4H Symposium, hosted by the WIC Specialized Committee on AI, took place at the National Convention Center in Beijing on May 17.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
